Batteries

Batteries

Deposit used batteries in the "Big Green Box" and the library sends them away for recycling.

Clothing

New and lightly used clothing will be collected and donated to the Helping Hands Rescue Mission.

A donation bin is in the Library's vestibule, collecting new and lightly used clothing for people in need, and will be donated to the Helping Hands Rescue Mission.

Glasses

Glasses

Donate usable eyeglasses to Lions Club International Recycle for Sight program.

Plastic Bags & Wrap

Deposit your clean plastic film (e.g. plastic bags, bread bags, etc.) in the bin located in the Library lobby.

Yarn

If you have unwanted yarn, there is a collection basket in the community notice alcove. The yarn is given to Care to Knit, a group that provides hand knit & crocheted items to people in hospitals, shelters, nursing homes, and hospices.

Secure Document Shredding at the Library

Shred-it: Document Shredding

Shredding bins and services are provided by Shred-it. Documents are stored in locked containers within the library and collected regularly. As an NAID AAA-certified organization, Shred-it meets or exceeds the requirements established by the National Association for Information Destruction.

Paper Shredding Events

Details for shredding at Harborfields Public Library is as follows:

No registration is necessary.

You may bring up to three (3) bags or boxes of household documents.

Drive your vehicle into the library parking lot on Wyckoff Street, adjacent to the Main Library entrance, to get in the queue for shredding. When you are next to the truck, remove your items from your vehicle and empty them into the large bin for shredding, and exit the parking lot. Plastic bags and cardboard boxes cannot go through the shredder.

Please call individual libraries for their shredding guidelines. Each library welcomes patrons living within the Town of Huntington.

American Flag Drop-off

American Flag, tattered

The South Huntington Public Library is hosting the Flag Collection Box.

Bring your old and worn American flags to be disposed of properly.

If you cannot make it to South Huntington Public Library, you may bring your flag into Harborfields and leave it with a staff member at the Circulation desk, and it will then be sent to South Huntington.

The Northport American Legion Post 694 also has a drop-box year-round at 7 Woodside Avenue, Northport.

Operation Medicine Cabinet

The Public Libraries in the Town of Huntington have partnered with Northport Police Department, Suffolk County Police Department, and Suffolk County Sheriff's Office to collect unused or expired prescription and over-the-counter medications. Proper disposal of these items is essential for risk reduction and environmental protection. No questions asked and no personal information is required.

Only medications in pill form will be accepted and must be placed in a plastic bag before arrival.

E-Waste Collection

Bring your unwanted/used computers, cell phones, printers, televisions, tablets, keyboards, cables, wires, circuit boards, or stereos to the Library parking lot for safe disposal.

Items Not Accepted: large appliances, microwave ovens, power tools, lawn mowers, fluorescent bulbs, alkaline batteries and vacuum cleaners.
